CAROLINE POWELL ON FITNESS FOR EVENTING As the start of the new eventing season approaches, ensuring your horse is fit enough to tackle an event is vitally important to avoid injury and ensure you both enjoy competing, advises international event rider Caroline Powell. “At the BE80, BE90 and even BE100 levels of affiliated eventing, the sort of fast work we use for the higher levels isn’t really necessary”, explains Caroline, whose horses are always in tremendous form, supple and athletic in all three phases. She enjoys support from Equine Products UK, whose nutritional experts provide advice to ensure her horses receive all the nutritional support they need to stay fit throughout a busy season. “To be fit enough to compete at the early spring events”, explains Caroline, “the horse needs first of all to be in full work, which means being ridden 5 or 6 times a week, having done plenty of hacking and roadwork to achieve a basic level of fitness. “Regular schooling and jumping is essential so that everything is going well at home and you both feel confident before you venture out to an event. If you’ve done quite a bit of cross country in the past, a couple of schooling outings should be enough to get you back in the swing of it all, but if you haven’t done much, then some cross country schooling sessions with a trainer would be helpful before you add in the pressures of a competition. “It’s also worth checking that your horse is receiving correct nutritional support from his diet and I use a number of products routinely for all the horses, but three in particular, FlexiVite HA, Transvite Maintenance and Selenavite E, are very important. FlexiVite helps to maintain the horses’ joints at every level of competition, Transvite Maintenance helps maintain a healthy digestive system, correct condition and reduce the stresses of training, travelling and competing and Selenavite E ensures their vitamin, mineral and trace element requirements are fully met, all of which are fundamental to both performance and general wellbeing.” If you are planning to enjoy Eventing this season and would like some help with nutritional supplements for your horse, contact Equine Products UK on 0191 264 5536, Ends Caption for accompanying image: - Caroline Powell and Lenamore after their victory at Burghley 4*CCI last autumn. |
